Udupi, Oct 21: The Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre (MCCCC), Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal, MAHE has been accredited by the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) as the ESMO designated centre of Integrated Oncology and Palliative Care.
Dr Karthik Udupa, professor and head, department of Medical Oncology recently received this award at the ESMO 2019 Congress, Barcelona, Spain.
The accreditation is for a period of three years from January 2020 to December 2022. Across the globe, top 21 cancer centres were selected for the award, among them only two cancer centres were from India and Manipal is one of them. It is a rare feat and a great honour purely accoladed due to comprehensive and integrated oncology services offered by a team of highly trained and skilled cancer specialists at the Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre.
The MCCCC has departments of medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, paediatric oncology, palliative medicine and nuclear medicine. It has site specific tumour boards, second opinion clinics, onco-pathology and onco-radiology services. The ESMO accreditation will enable Manipal to be part of the international ESMO working group for cancer guidelines creation, developing minimum standards for supportive and palliative care provision by the oncologists and to be part of the international oncology network for quality cancer care.
