Panaji, Jul 29: A collection of short stories, titled 'Spandan', authored by poetess-turned-writer Nayana Aadarkar, was released on Tuesday, July 28, by noted writer and assistant secretary of Goa Konkani Akademi, Dr Jayanti Naik, at a function held in the Institute of Menezes Braganza (IMB) here.
'Spandan’ contains 17 short stories and has been published by Hireyug Prakashan. Nayana Adarkar has lots of scripts and awards under her belt, having written around eight books for children, two anthologies of poems, a collection of essays etc. With the release of ‘Spandan’’, a collection of short stories, she has forayed into a new territory. Adarkar says, she never imagined that the issues she watched the society trying to come to terms with, would come out in the book form one day.
Former manager of the daily, ‘Sunaparant’, Vinod Shetye, presided over the function. Mohandas Surlekar of IMB was the guest of honour, while noted writer Arun Sakhardande and chief guest Dr Jayanti Naik were present on the dais along with the writer.
Mohandas Surlekar, speaking on the occasion, praised the author for her contributions to the field of Konkani language and literature.
In the past, writers used to convey messages to the society through their short stories. But now-a-days, that concept is on the wane. Now, whatever a writer sees around him/her is reduced to writing along with their own thoughts. But the message, which forms an integral part of a short story, is missing in their writings, Surlekar lamented.
He also added, that slowly a new form of short stories has been emerging and urged the writers to convey good and socially relevant messages to the society through their writings.
Dr Jayanti Naik appreciated the contribution of Nayana for Konkani and praised her talent in different fields.
Naik noted that Nayana has dealt with issues like prostitution, post-marriage sex life, extra marital affairs etc., in her short stories very openly. Considering this, Dr she noted that no woman writer in Konkani has touched issues like these in their writings. She appreciated Nayana Adarkar for writing on these issues for opening the eyes of the society.
“If such things as Nayana has briefed in her stories are really happening around us, then we will have to have a relook as to where we are heading to,” a concerned Dr Naik said and praised the writer again for her openness.
Shetye and Sakhardande also spoke on the occasion.
Hiranesh Adarkar and Yuga Adarkar welcomed the guests by presenting them flowers. Poetess Gwadalup Dias compered the programme and later proposed vote of thanks.
