Udupi, Jul 24: The problems the people of Karnataka coast have been going through because of the wretched stretch of the national highway 17 here, reverberated through the Lok Sabha in the form of a written query raised by local Lok Sabha member D V Sadanand Gowda on Thursday July 23.
Gowda, through his question, urged the union government to take note of the precarious state of the roads and bridges in the coast here, and demanded for immediate steps to strengthen the bridges and repair the roads, besides converting the national highway into four-lane one. The tribulations the road users have been going through was explained in detail through the question.
Minister of state in the department of road transport and highways in the union government, R P S Singh, informed that the widening of the highway for a stretch of 17.3 kms from Surtkal to Mangalore would be completed by December and that for the balance 282.7 kms, repair works are yet to be initiated.
