Mangaluru, Oct 2: Congress leaders accompanied by hundreds of party workers took out a Padayatra from Karavali Utsav ground to Town Hall on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary on Wednesday, October 2.
Former MLAs J R Lobo and Mohiuddin Bava, MLA U T Khader, former minister Ramanath Rai, MLC Ivan D’Souza, MLC Harish Kumar and youth leader Mithun Rai took part in the procession. The leaders were holding placards, flags with charakas and raising slogans to make people aware of Mahatma Gandhi and his principles.
After the conclusion of the procession, a formal function was held at Town Hall.
Congress leader Dayanath Kotian said, "For the sake of Independence, Mahatma Gandhi went to jail 22 times. His sacrifice, contribution towards independence will always be remembered. When people from Gandhi’s native compared him to Lord Krishna, Gandhi opposed it. But recently, Narendra Modi was termed as Mahatma. We must say that there is only one Mahatma that is Gandhi and he deserves to be called Mahatma.”
All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary P C Vishnunathan appreciated the Padayatra and termed it a unique way to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. “This event will become an example as it was organised in a disciplined manner,” he said.
