Mangaluru, Oct 2: ‘Gandhi Jayanti’, also the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of our Nation was celebrated on October 2, at Lourdes Central School open grounds. The manager, Fr Wilson Vitus D’Souza, the principal, Fr Robert D’Souza and the vice-principal, Belita Mascarenhas graced the programme by their presence.
The programme began with a prayer song after which Shanon of class X welcomed the gathering.
To acknowledge and highlight the significance of secularism, an all faith prayer- ‘Sarva Dharma Prarthana’ was oraganized. The Lourdites read out a verse each from the Bible, Quran, Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta and Guru Granth Sahib with an interpretation for each prayer.
The significance of the day was read out by Minal of class 7. Remembering yet another great leader, Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second Prime Minister of India, Prachi of class 7C apprised the audience on his contribution to the nation.
Vidhya Joseph the Social Science co-ordinator enlightened the audience on the life story of Mahatma Gandhi.
To express their patriotism in their little way, the Lourdites presented a patriotic song.
Students of class IV and V depicted the ‘Dandi March’, a milestone in the freedom struggle and also staged a play that was greatly appreciated by all.
Fr Wilson Vitus D’Souza in his presidential address upheld the values of Gandhiji and highlighted the sacrifices he made for the country. He also said that the students have to know the Mahatma and imbibe his teachings in their life.
Aaron Lobo of class VIII proposed the vote of thanks.
