Mangalore: 18-year-old Preetham D'Souza Meets Watery Grave at Stone Quarry

Mangalore, Jul 22: Preetam D'Souza (18), a student of SNS Polytechnic Sunkadakatte, drowned in the standing water of a stone quarry pit in Kolambe village near Sunkadakatte, Bajpe on Monday July 20.

Preetam along with friends Dheeraj and Jitesh, had been to the house of another friend, Latish. While walking by, he reportedly slipped and drowned. He was the last of the three children of Raymond and Lilly D'Souza, from Addoor Kanjilakody village.

    My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. May Preetham''s soul rest in eternal peace. I suppose stone quarrying is carried out on a large scale throughout DK, especially cutting of laterite stones which are used for construction purpose. Most of these units do not have licences and do the cutting work by greasing the palms of the concerned authorities (the operators are even supposed to take permission from the dept. of archeology to indulge in such activities). No safety regulations are followed and these large water filled ponds are an open invitation for tragedies like the one that has occured and claimed our Preetham''s life. I hope the authorities wake up and make the people running these units responsible for such incidents by atleast making them pay heavy compensation to the next of kin of the victims. Stone quarrying and cutting is a big nuisance in hilly areas of interior Karnataka and is being run with impunity as it is very lucrative. These sharks are bothered only about the money they get from such activity turning a blind eye to all other things.
