Udupi: Customary ‘Baagina’ Offering to Swarna River on July21

Udupi, Jul 17: The custom of offering of 'Baagina' to Swarna River, the lifeline of the city, will be performed at 7.00 am on Tuesday July 21. Swarna River has been supplying drinking water to the city and irrigating the farmlands across the district, said Chimbra Siddi Vinayaka temple trustee Ramesh Rao.
Addressing the media persons at a press conference held here on Friday July 17, Rao said that Swarna River that originates in the Western Ghats, flows through the plains, before joining the Arabian Sea. It is the lifeline of peasants and citizens alike, providing drinking water and water for the agricultural activities and plantations across the district. Swarna River is supplying drinking water to the citizens in 35 wards under the local municipality and 20 villages in the district, he explained.
Sage Yugapurusha Vadiraj had stated in his scriptures that those who bathe in Suvarna River on Chaturdashi day get blessed abundantly, besides being cleansed of their sins by Lord Krishna. In the backdrop of this, district in-charge and state home minister Dr V S Acharya will initiate the tradition of offering ‘Baagina’ to Swarna River along with his wife on Tuesday morning, in order to express the gratitude of the people for the abundant supply of water to all people throughout the district, he added.
Meanwhile, the offering of ‘Baagina’ will become a tradition that will be continued in the future by the district in-charge ministers. Accordingly, ‘Baagina’ programme will be held on Tuesday morning, in association with the citizens and district administration. It will be attended by the deputy commissioner, peoples’ representatives and Sri Laxmivarateerta Swami of Shiroor Mutt.
Chimbra Siddi Vinayaka temple managing trustee Krishnamurti Shivattaya, Vasudev Bhat, Ramesh Naik, Harikrishna Shivattaya and Padigar Srinivas Tantri were present at the press conference.
