Udupi, Sep 22: “It is possible to promote tourism attracting tourists by keeping beaches clean,” said deputy commissioner Jagadish. He was speaking after inaugurating international beach cleaning day held by coastal security police at Malpe beach on Saturday.

“If the beaches are clean, people come in more numbers promoting tourism. Nobody likes to throw trash at clean spots. The trash that is thrown at seasides joins sea adversely affecting sea creatures and fishermen. Therefore, keeping beaches clean is essential and is the responsibility of all,” he said.

Municipal commissioner Kallolikar said that awareness on cleanliness is created everywhere. “Ban on plastic is being enforced strictly to make Udupi plastic-free,” he added.

Coastal protection police SP Chetan who presided said that sea will be clean if the seashore is kept clean. “As per an estimate, over 40,000-45,000 items can be found within a distance of 1.5 km from the shore, causing problems to sea creatures and fishermen. Trash should be disposed of elsewhere and not thrown in the sea,” he said.

Udupi municipal councillor Laxmi Manjunath, Mangaluru coast guard deputy commandant Pradeep Kumar Saha, ASP Kumar Chandra, fisheries department deputy director Ganesh were present.

Coastal security police circle inspector Pramod Kumar welcomed the gathering. Inspector Raghavendra Kandike rendered the vote of thanks and PSIB Manmohan Rao compered the programme.

Students of Milagres college, Poornaprajnya evening college, Government PU college, Malpe, G Shanker P U College, Kidiyoor and Bharat Scouts and guides students took part.
