Udupi, Jul 13: Member of parliament D V Sadanand Gowda (DVS) and Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon held discussions with the senior officials of the ports department and in the in-charge deputy commissioner Prasanna Kumar, on the issue of initiating emergency measures against sea erosion.
Speaking at Kaup, DVS said that the works on the temporary protective wall have already begun at Padukare region and within ten days, the walls will be erected at Muloor, Kaipunja, Padukare, Udayavar Kanakoda and Tenka Yermal where sea erosion has been intense. On Saturday, he visited various sites in the district which have been reeling under the onslaught of the sea.
DVS said that various memorandums submitted to the central government by the state government and the peoples' representatives of the coast since the year 1996, have failed to get satisfactory response. "I held discussions in the Lok Sabha session last year on this issue. I will take a delegation of the Chief Minster, district in-charge ministers of the coastal districts and the MLAs of the twin-districts to Delhi and put pressure on the central government to yield to our demands for permanent protective walls, he explained.
MLA Lalaji Mendon said that the state government has promised to extend wholehearted support for facing the sea erosion. He asked the officials to work hard to implement the government projects at a fast pace.
Zilla panchayat member Nayana Ganesh, taluk panchayat members Jagadish Acharya and Arun Shetty Padoor, BJP block president Ravindra Shetty Kollabettu, general secretary Kutyar Navin Shetty and various other leaders were present.
