Mangaluru, Sep 13: MSNM Besant Institute of PG Studies on September 7 organised a tree planting programme on the occasion of Vanamahotsava.
Tree planting enthusiast and environmental activist Jeeth Milan Roche was chief guest for the programme.
Dr Praveen Kumar K C, HOD and dean, department of Commerce, Besant Women’s College was guest of honor.
The chief guest and guest of honour planted a sandalwood sapling and a Birinda sapling respectively in the campus, accompanied by the faculty and student representatives.
Addressing the gathering, the chief guest Jeeth Milan Roche lamented that humans are the most destructive of all species. He stressed the importance of protecting and preserving plants to ensure survival of all species. Sharing his experiences, he asserted that nature holds the cure for the world's ills. He promised to plant at least 1000 saplings in the institute premises in 2020.
The guest of honour, Dr Praveen Kumar spoke on the importance of air, water and fire for healthy living. He reminded the audience that as a mother protects her child, mother Earth protects all life and must be protected in return.
Dr Vishnu Prasanna spoke about imbalance in nature due to deforestation.
Institute director Dr Molly Chaudhuri spoke on the importance of sustainable development and the 'Power of one'. “Today’s natural disasters are manmade. Every individual has the power to change society one person at a time.” she said.
Jeeth Milan Roche handed over saplings to students who had volunteered to plant saplings in their homes.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Shruthi of II MBA. Harshitha compered the programme. Usha Mogra, faculty, coordinated the programme.
