Bhatkal, Aug 7: The taluk is completely devastated with the fury of the incessant downpour. It seems the whole town is submerged in water. People are in a panic situation. Hundreds houses and shops situated in low-lying areas are inundated.
Many areas of the taluk including Moodabhatakala, Chowthani, Shirali and Murudeshwar are affected with flood. In Moodabhatkala and Chowthani, hardly any land can be seen. People of Mundalli, which is an island area, had gone to the market. They could not return because of the increase in the level of water.
The roofs of more than 35 houses have blown up by gusty winds in areas of Hebale, Kaikini, Jali, Shirali and Murudeshwar. Some other houses got damaged due to the falling of trees on them. The taluk has received more than 200 mm of rain in one day. HESCOM has incurred a loss of Rs six lac due to the falling of 17 electricity poles. Three transformers are also damaged badly.
The boulders and coconut trees by the side of the beach in the town is being eroded by the rough sea. The road that connects Jali and Hebale via the beach has disappeared into the sea. There is a grave danger of houses and agricultural land getting eroded, if the situation continues in the same manner.
The district administration including MLA Sunil Naika is present in the affected areas and is doing their best to control the situation.
