Karkala, Jun 11: Canara Bank, Kedinje branch in the taluk has filed a criminal case in the rural police station here, alleging that a couple had raised huge loans from the Bank, by hypothecating non-existent vehicles.
In the complaint, the Bank said, Henry Pereira and his wife Juliet Pereira, residents of Nitte Parappady village, had raised loans of Rs 3, 81,000 in May 2005, Rs 6, 93,000 in August 2006 and Rs 8, 62,000 in January 2007. They had furnished documents to show that the buses, for the purchase of which these loans were granted, had been hypothecated to the Bank.
Only when the bank officials went to verify the vehicles after heavy overdue piled up in the loan accounts, did they realize that the Bank had been defrauded. The registration certificates provided to the Bank were found to be fake, the bank said. The bank revealed, an amount of Rs 10, 35,785 is overdue in these loan accounts.
