Mangalore, Jun 4: The Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) has come forward to prepare a digital map of areas under the jurisdiction of the Mangalore City Corporation using high-resolution satellite imaging and the global positioning system.
The map will provide details of the status of infrastructure in the jurisdiction of the corporation.
The corporation, in its meeting on Tuesday, resolved to authorise the Standing Committee for Taxation, Finance and Appeals to study the matter and take a decision on whether to approve or reject the proposal. This subject was referred to the committee because the corporation will have to pay Rs. 8.54 lakh to the KSCST for preparing the map.
Details of the agenda tabled in the House on Tuesday said the digital map would help the corporation prepare a comprehensive development plan. The map will give details about existing railway lines, roads, parks, green belts, buildings and population, among other things.
Speaking to The Hindu on Wednesday, Mayor M. Shankar Bhat said it was necessary for the corporation to have such a map to ensure better planning. The councillors approved the proposal to purchase software for the corporation’s accounts section at an estimated cost of Rs. 2 lakh from the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation.
