Panaji,May 29: Expressing shock and anguish over the confessions made by the serial killer, chief minister Digamber Kamat on Friday May 29 said that the acts were unimaginable.
“This is the only case in Goa’s history wherein someone is on rampage of killing young women. I was shocked… This is something unimaginable,” Kamat said.
Mahanand Naik (40), is arrested by Ponda police for killing young women by luring them with the promise to get married. The killer has confessed of 14 murders till date while police expect that the toll may rise during further interrogation.
“The Home Minister and director general of police have briefed me on this case. Whatever they told me is shocking. Even the victim’s close relatives were not suspecting Mahanand to be such a criminal,” Kamat said.
“The killer is cunning and shrewd. His modus operandi was such that no one could doubt him,” the chief minister said complimenting the state police for nabbing a serial killer.
State police who stumbled upon the killer during the investigation of a rape case have now formed special teams to investigate Mahanand’s crimes. The 40-year-old married man and father of one-and-half-year-old girl was arrested for allegedly raping his wife’s friend.
During the custodial interrogation, Mahanand confessed of killing several young women. The killer has confessed of 14 crimes, mostly of the young unsuspecting girls between age group of 19 to 25.
Police said that Mahanand used to lure the victims to isolated place and later kill them to rob away the gold ornaments. The killer has confessed of killing the women for last one and half decade with the first murder reported in 1994 and latest one is in the year 2009.
