Mangaluru, Jul 8: A group of people, misconstruing that a pick up van which they saw passing through Kulshekar Chowki was illegally trafficking cows, intercepted it and assaulted those inside. The 407 tempo in question however was loaded with mangoes. In the attack, a person was injured.
The injured, identified as Ummer Farooq (35), was admitted into a private hospital here for treatment.
At 4 am on Sunday, Ummer Farooq, Ashfaq and Latif were transporting mango boxes from Ulaibettu to the city market. Three miscreants wrongly suspected the tempo to be loaded with cows and that they were headed for the slaughterhouse. They chased the tempo and stopped the vehicle although the people in the tempo told them that the vehicle was loaded with mangoes. During this melee, the driver and another person, stopped the vehicle near Kulshekar Chowki and ran away. Farooq, who was left alone with the tempo, was beaten up by the gang. The assaulters have been accused of robbing Rs 70,000 from the vehicle.
After the attack, the gang took the tempo from Kulshekar Chowki and left it near Kulshekhar church. A mobile phone belonging to the mango transporters was found in the tempo. The attackers remain unidentified so far. Their facial features have been captured in CCTV camera and the police are hunting for them.
As soon as the news of the attack spread, people came together near Kulshekar Chowki. But the police instructed them to disperse.
A case in this connection was registered in the town police station at Kankanady. Investigation is progressing.
