Udupi, Jul 3: Milagres English Medium School Kallianpur has carved a niche for itself in Udupi district not just for its holistic education system and sports achievements but also with its innovative eco-friendly ventures, the recent being the installation of rain water harvesting and purifying unit in the campus.
On account of celebration of World Rain Water Day 2019 and Year of Water the rain water harvesting unit at Milagres School spread over 12,000 sq ft area was inaugurated by Sindhu B Rupesh, chief executive officer of Udupi zilla panchayat (ZP) near here on Wednesday, July 3. A Srinivas Rao, chief programme officer (CPO) of Udupi zilla panchayat, state resource person of rain water awareness, eco activist and Rajotsava awardee Joseph G M Rebelllo, Fr Lancy Fernandes SJ, principal and Veera D’Silva, headmistress were present. Fr Dr Lawrence C D Souza, correspondent of Milagres Educational Institutions, presided over the programme.
The programme began with the solemn singing of State Anthem (Naada Geethe) by students. Fr Lancy Fernandes SJ, principal of Milagres School welcomed the gathering. After a short briefing about the purpose of the day by Joseph, Sindhu Rupesh, CEO of Udupi zilla panchayat inaugurated the rain water harvesting unit. Rev Fr Lawrence C D Souza inaugurated the rain water blocking unit. An informative handbill with awareness regarding the need for conservation of water was released by A Srinivas Rao chief programme officer (CPO) of Udupi zilla panchayat.
Eco-friendly initiatives of the school
Eco awareness has been a trademark of the institution. The school campus is adorned with Eco Walls painted with Eco messages that speak to children. During weekly school assemblies students take the Eco-Pledge to safeguard nature and protect it. The biodiversity of the campus has been identified and name plates are put to encourage students to learn the botanical names and show respect to them.
In her address chief guest Sindhu Rupesh lauded the school for this venture. She advised the students to follow the example of the school and conserve water in their own homes and localities. Further she said, “Water tankers should not become a trend next year. Rains may not come often. We need to be proactive to preserve water.”
Fr Lawrence D Souza in his message thanked the district administration for their support to Eco ventures. Rev Fr Lancy Fernandes in his message said that and institution can teach eco awareness better by practicing it and thus this venture has seen the light of the day. Media persons from various TV channels and dailies were present.
