Alappuzha, Jun 19: Aluva traffic police station civil police officer (CPO) N A Ajaz who set himself and a woman police officer on fire for rejecting his proposal to marry him, died on Wednesday, June 19.
The spurned lover had pre-planned the murder of Soumya Pushpakaran, CPO of Vallikunnam. On June 15, Ajaz hit his car to Soumya’s scooter. When she tried to run, he stabbed her with a knife and then poured petrol on himself and Soumya and set fire.
While Soumya succumbed to her injuries, Ajaz who suffered from 50 per cent burns was receiving treatment at the ICU of Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. The doctors earlier in the day had said that his condition was critical. His blood pressure was low and dialysis could not be done. His pulse rate was diminishing and he kept falling unconscious. On Tuesday evening, doctors diagnosed Ajaz with pneumonia. On Wednesday his heart beat drastically dropped and he died.

Ajaz and Soumya had been friends for three years. Soumya was married and was mother of three children. When Ajaz expressed his love for her and told her to leave her husband and children, she refused and started avoiding him. She also blocked him on WhatsApp. Ajaz was agitated with her behaviour and decided to kill her.
Ajaz was also suspended on Tuesday by the Ernakulam Rural Superintendent of Police (SP), K Karthik, based on a preliminary investigation of the incident.
Soumya’s funeral will be held on Thursday. Her husband Sanjeev is expected to reach from Libya on Wednesday night.
