Bengaluru, Jun 14 (IANS): About 15,000 doctors and nurses in private hospitals across Karnataka on Friday joined the nationwide strike being staged to protest the alleged assault on their junior colleagues at NRS Medical College in Kolkata, an official said.

"All private doctors, including paramedics and nurses are on a day-long strike in support of our colleagues in Kolkata who were assaulted by the relatives of a patient who died in their hospital on June 10. Out-patient departments (OPDs) in private hospitals and nursing homes are closed," Indian Medical Association's (IMA) Karnataka unit treasurer B. Veeranna told IANS here.

"Doctors and nurses in state-run hospitals, who are IMA members, are participating in the strike to protest the high-handedness of the West Bengal government," said Veeranna.

"There is no protection to our fraternity from violent attacks or assaults by relatives and friends of patients," lamented Veeranna.

The doctors and the medical staff on duty in private hospitals and nursing homes were also seen sporting black bands on their arms and aprons to express solidarity with their counterparts in Kolkata hospitals. Several male doctors on duty were seen sporting helmets while attending to in-patients.

About 5,000 doctors, nurses and other medical staff also staged a demonstration at the IMA (Karnataka chapter) office in the city's southwest suburb.

    Karnataka Doctors can show solidarity with WB doctors with symbolic protest so as to reach Central Govt to put pressure on WB Govt.

    WB Govt does not care if people of Karnataka suffer because of doctors' strike.

    Are doctors in Karnataka facing a situation like WB in Karnataka? Then why do you want to punish people here?

From a well known reputed hospital. That too..... The hospital has very good security.. but what will 10 security men do against 100 people with sticks and stones????

    We all should stand with the Doctors in these times of utter lawlessness. It's heartening to see the nurses supporting the cause. Hopefully the Doctors will stand with them too in their fight for just wages and facilities.

    The docs have no choice when their life itself is in danger. A depressed fracture in the skull is not a joke.
    Neither the administration nor the civil society seems to be bothered. Mamatha Banerjee's threats themselves are so insensitive.

    Do you think this has to do with quota and reservation?? Where the doctors don't know what they are doing cos.... They were never good enough students to begin with?? And they just got with their substandard Marks because of quota and reservation???? This was bound to happen.... Moreover... Do other professional people get beaten up.??? Like lawyers... Who didn't fight their case well??? Or engineers who didn't construct roads well?? Or politicians who promised a lot during elections and did not deliver as promised??? Do these people also get beaten up? If NO.. WHY???;

    Total Lawlessness in the state of West Bengal, attacking doctors a heinous crime. Doctors are working with fear always which needs to be addressed. Attacking a Doctor with weapons & damaging his skull is a heinous crime which needs severe punishment to those who attacked the Doctor on duty.
