Mangaluru: Mass fish deaths in Permude – SEZ officials visit spot, taken to task by locals

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Jun 11: Following the death of several fish due to the chemical content released to the water stream at Kayarkatte near Permude, the officials of Special Economic Zone (SEZ), visited the spot on Monday, June 10.

The officials were taken to task by locals from the surrounding areas.

Daijiworld.com had reported about the mass fish death in the water stream at Kayarkatte two days ago.

As many as 15 houses depend for water on the stream for their daily use. Since the last four days, locals of Permude are agitated by the huge amount of chemical content that is being released to the stream which led to the death of water bodies in large numbers. .

Residents also alleged that foul smell emanates from the water due to the chemical. Many complained of breathing problems as well. In addition, if they step into the water, they fall sick due to skin-related diseases, said locals.

When taken to task by locals, the SEZ officials, refused to admit that the mass fish death was due to the release of chemical content by SEZ companies into the water stream. The officials further said that they will come up with a report on the reason behind the catastrophe.

Speaking to daijiworld.com, Raghavendra Rao, a local said, "SEZ officials visited the spot. There was a verbal spat between the officials and loacls. The officials said they will look into the matter.”

    :).. Reputed, educated??? Wake up

In which other country can a Private Company get water upstream and leave citizens with no drinking water??? PATHETIC

Wake up citizens....go out and protest and demand justice...Stop sleeping...Ask your elected officials about it instead of bashing one another...

Has any common citizens checked what chemicals and toxins are being generated by these companies?
Asked how they treat and dispose those toxins?? Checked how they are performing??? Are they doing a good job, or an OK job? Who is keeping them in check?

The dead fish are only a tip of the iceberg. Mangaluru is irreversibly polluted by SEZ, MRPL,HP and other hydrocarbon and chemical companies.

The ground water around MRPL was polluted years back. The sea water is contaminated from the waste released by these companies. That's the reason fish production is declining year after year and quality of fish is also bad.

Now the question is, is any authority monitoring these companies and the pollution they are creating ? There is news that more companies are going to come. This will only further ruin the atmosphere. It is high time citizens of Mangaluru unite and take some action or else many companies will come through the back door and some people will become rich, but the general public will only get dust, pollution and contaminated water.

Praveen Surathkal, whatever company it is and the river, companys responsiblity is to see that wastage from company specially chemicals are there, not to let the waste water simply open to public see.Instead they have to recycle it with proper drainage closed system ,workout chemicals and only without chemi, let it pass through only after testing that its not harm fish or humans.water has to pass through many layers of jelly ,green gras etc.and normal flow.Since our health dept self is not interested ,take only money as tax,or not even knowing what should be done.Poor people .

Make the official who is coming there to drink the water first and then go for inspection. Then he will not inspect as he knows what it contains

Contamination of water because of industries around may be the reason for death of these fishes which need to be explored and corrected.
