Mangaluru, Jun 10: Vehicles carrying excess schoolchildren is a common sight in Mangaluru. People have been witnessing this often and unfortunately this practice is considered 'normal'. However, city traffic police have been highlighting the hazards and taking strict action against violators, more in the recent past.
In the last two weeks, after the schools reopened, the traffic department held awareness drives among school van and auto rickshaw drivers. They were strictly warned against taking more than the prescribed number of students,
Also, the police had warned against goods vehicles transporting passengers.
In the last two weeks, a total of 175 cases were registered against goods vehicles carrying passengers and 48 cases against school vans and auto rickshaws carrying excess schoolchildren.
Mangaluru city police commissioner Sandeep Patil on his twitter handle warned strict penal action against those who violate the maximum passenger rule, as it puts life at risk.
