Mangaluru: Police book vehicles for carrying schoolchildren in excess

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jun 10: Vehicles carrying excess schoolchildren is a common sight in Mangaluru. People have been witnessing this often and unfortunately this practice is considered 'normal'. However, city traffic police have been highlighting the hazards and taking strict action against violators, more in the recent past.

In the last two weeks, after the schools reopened, the traffic department held awareness drives among school van and auto rickshaw drivers. They were strictly warned against taking more than the prescribed number of students,

Also, the police had warned against goods vehicles transporting passengers.

In the last two weeks, a total of 175 cases were registered against goods vehicles carrying passengers and 48 cases against school vans and auto rickshaws carrying excess schoolchildren.

Mangaluru city police commissioner Sandeep Patil on his twitter handle warned strict penal action against those who violate the maximum passenger rule, as it puts life at risk.

Auto rickshaws need to be modified to accommodate more number of school children with enough seats and better/safety arrangements. Auto Rickshaw manufacturers should come out with such novice idea with reasonable increase in cost so that owners and well as the passengers can enjoy the benefits. Presently each rickshaws jam more than 10 kids with any room to breath properly. So sad !

Why this Traffic rules violation in Mangalore only ? Near the school gate CC Camara must install. Traffic department must join with school authorities to install. The photos will clearly show which Auto or Omni has put overload children. If our Traffic department is strict in this matter, easily Police can control this problem.

Appreciated. Good Job by the Cops. But this unsafe practice can be solved well with parents efforts as well. Our parents so busy in life they just drop there children to van/auto think it's their job now to take them to school. Nobody bother about how our kids reach school. So many van/auto driver driving rash, wrong side for shortcuts etc if you warn the driver whom you hire and problem is solved. Daily ask your kids how driver is taking you is he driving safe etc. Accordingly advise driver if again he does same mistake then change driver may b cause some extra penny but ultimately kids safe which is more important.

Hope the police dept and RTO implements the same strict rule on Mangalore city bus operations. Soon or later Mangalore city bus which is a public conveyance system will be high risk area if an national survey is conducted.

Good initiative by traffic police. Same should be conducted in Udupi District also, I have seen omni drivers carrying school children's like luggage and drive recklessly. Still Udupi Manipal road is incomplete. I think our MP think its rocket science.

Very good move by the police but not sufficient. To the drivers, police should speak the same language which the drivers understand. Police should also give stern warning to the parents too. Some vehicles are so small, they carry children in unsafe way.
