Madikeri, Jun 9: H N Mahesh from Ponnampet in Kodagu district, who is a part of 44th Rashtriya Rifles contingent of the Indian Army, was fired at and injured during an anti-terrorist operation. Mahesh, recipient of gallantry award, Shaurya Chakra, is now recovering at the army hospital, Chandigarh.
Although Mahesh was injured on May 29, the incident came to the fore with delay. Mahesh called his parents onk June 6, to inform that that he was injured in the firing and that he was recovering.
Mahesh, son of Nagaraj and Laxmi couple from Gandhinagar, Ponnampet, had joined the Army Engineering Corps seven years back. He was later shifted to 44th Rashtriya Riles functioning at Jammu and Kashmir.
60 Rashtriya Rifles soldiers surrounded a house on May 29 in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, after getting to know that four terrorists were holed up there. The soldiers asked the terrorists to surrender. One of the bullets fired by the terrorists during this operation hit Mahesh in the face.
The soldiers of the continent then engineered a blast which destroyed the entire house along with the four terrorists.
