Bantwal, Jun 8: After the silt accumulated at the dam of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) and the AMR dam at Shambhoor was cleared, water is now flowing into Thumbay dam. The jack well at Jakribettu is full now and the water inflow at the dam has resulted in an increase in water level at the dam.
The water began to flow into the dam after local MLA Rajesh Naik Ulipadyguthu, municipal councilor Govind Prabhu and others undertook dredging operation by putting to use backhoe, excavators etc. The water which had stranded about two km away flowed into the jack well and inundated it. With this, drinking water problem of the town has been solved.
A number of publications had earlier reported that if the silt accumulated in the riverbed is removed, water would flow into the dam. Even after two rains, no inflow was registered at the dam. Still, the quantum of water that has flown in now has surprised many.
Executive engineer of Mangaluru City Corporation, Linge Gowda, confirmed that water has flown into the dam because of clearance of silt at MRPL dam and making way for the water to flow into the dam. He said water has indeed flown into the dam and the jack well. Rajesh Naik Ulipadyguthu said that with the efforts of himself and others, the silt that was blocking the movement of water into the dam was removed and as such water began to flow into the dam.
