Mangaluru, Jun 5: The Maryhill helipad is a favourite hangout spot for many. Children, women, senior citizens frequent the helipad for evening walk, exercise, play or simply to admire the scenery and feel the cool breeze.

The open space at the helipad is a perfect playground for children. Unfortunately, this beautiful locale has turned into a dump yard and is currently in a pathetic situation. In the late hours, young revellers visit the spot to drink and smoke. They have dumped empty alcohol bottles and cigarette packets all over the place.

In the recent times, the helipad is rarely used. The politicians who usually landed at the helipad, now arrive by plane at Mangaluru International Airport and a quick car ride to the city.

IGP Western Range Arun Chakravarthy's residence is located adjacent to the Maryhill helipad. In spite of this, the young revellers are not deterred. They prefer to party at the place and leave behind bottles and garbage, which has become a nuisance to the residents and general public.

In a matter of fact, there are so many glass bottles and pieces that it has become a dangerous place to walk.

Speaking to daijiworld.com, senior citizen Janardhan who resides in Maryhill said, "From past several years, I prefer this place for exercise and walk. This is a beautiful location and an open space. But now it has turned out to be a dump yard of alcohol bottles, glass pieces. I wonder despite IGP's residence located close by, why youngsters are not in control and create nuisance. They have destroyed this beautiful place.”

"Many youngsters come in their vehicles and drink alcohol and throw bottles in every corner of the place. The entire helipad has become a hang out spot of alcoholics. Police need to take stringent action against this,” stresses Janardhan.

Speaking to daijiworld.com, district-in-charge minister U T Khader said, "The Maryhill helipad ground is being misused during the late hours. I will ask police department to keep an eye on this area. Even the IGP's residence is located in this region, so I will ask the concerned department to take preventive measures and control this nuisance.”

Law and order is not the solution to these problems. The problem is in the mindset of the people. Firstly we must raise awareness among the people about the dangers of polluting the land, water and air. Secondly we must give them a reason not to dispose off glass and plastic bottles this way.
A wonderful thing i have observed here in Germany is that when we buy glass bottles, tins or plastic ones they charge some extra fee (0.25euro= approx 20 Rupees) so that these bottles are not just thrown away anywhere but, they can later be returned to a automated machine that scans the barcode and returns you the money/receipt.
This avoids unwanted disposal as well as the continuous recycling of glass, metal and plastic hence increasing the economy of the country. If this strategy is first introduced in mangalore then people will have a reason not to just throw away the bottles and pollute the environment, if not due to love for the environment at least for the love for money that we indians have :D.

I think its the job of culture masters and moral polices. If administration and some NGO's beautify this place with some plants and landscaping, with the help of regular police beat visit....this place can be transformed. There are very few places like this are available to enjoy the evening and fresh air. Hope it can be served for a good purpose!

That's how you think and that's why India is not changing. Remember if a person go to a better place and see better things happening they try to make their own place also better. Not the way you're thinking! Change your way of thinking, will be good for you

Sad to see this .People however they educated are forget sometime their born habit of throwing around ,but not in a bin.It is too much to walk.Parents should first teach children be a model ,to be tidy.Police can patrol around in the evening ,forbid them to carry alcohol bottles or throw it.Put heavy fines if found misusing it.Place sufficient waste bins .when they find misusing it ,ask them politely to leave the place.

Educating and controlling the public is somewhat difficult task unless the concerned department takes tough and stringent action on the violators.Nothing is impossible, everything is possible only when the concerned department takes an initiative and show zeal. This kind of ruckus, nuisance can't be tolerated anymore, which creates lots of inconvenience, uncomforts to the general public. All the miscreants who does this kind of hooliganism to be caught red handed and meted severest of severe punishment and ensure that such activities will not repeat in the future.

In spite all these drawbacks a resident in the locality planted many trees and putting lot of efforts to bring them up. Kudos to the family, who also built some ‘Kattes’ so the people can enjoy cool breeze under the trees.

No matter how escalated and we are, bottom line majority of we Indians lack civic responsibilities in every city or village. It's time that we change our education system to include the basic civic responsibility to develop in our children at very early age.

    Rashmi,

In Anaadi-Kaala, there were Thippi/Paale to use and throw which did not cause any harm, it degraded by itself within a year. At present we have developed into making un-degradable products like plastic/glass that are polluting our soil. We the human beings are the most destructive creatures on earth.

NS, our people need to be sent to Detroit to teach them why they should not spit/litter around. Else, they will not learn. Even today they are spitting through the window of the bus/car they are travelling and tossing out empty bottles.

There is a limit to tolerance. Helipad has a purpose whether or not its in use - it should not be permitted to be used by irresponsible people for merriment.

If you think Detroit is heaven, then you are sadly mistaken.

Like all cities, there are good as also, bad places. The bad places can be "very bad" than you think!

Like Mangalore, there is Heaven where people maintain thier surroundings. In the same tone, there are places which are derelict and inhatibale and people still do live there.

    The difference is the law.

In Detroit, the place will be condemned , cordeoned off and shut down by the authorities.

In Mangalore we do not carry guns and hence NO everyday violence.

So what is good in one place is bad by another.

Well about spitting, In Detoit it is self-controlled but NOT in Mangalore. .....It is human nature . All you have to do is watch a game of baseball and your thought will differ. But again, they do NOT spill their guts out in PUBLIC places.
