Udupi, Jun 6: As per an assessment made on Wednesday June 5, the water currently found in some pits of River Swarna would be sufficient to meet water requirements of the city here for five more days.
Currently water found from the pits dotting the riverbed is being pumped to Baje dam from where it is supplied to the city. Six pumps installed at Puthige bridge, pit of Puthige Math, Saibragundi etc is first pumped to the dam. On Sunday last, a huge boulder that was blocking the flow of water was removed, allowing the water to flow freely.
The administration is thinking of pumping of water from a pit in Swarna River at Bhandaribettu area and to organize voluntary participation of the general public to remove obstacles in the flow of river water, if rain continues to remain elusive even after five days. Bhandaribettu pit is expected to provide water for five days.
MLA Raghupati Bhat visited the pumping area on Wednesday too and observed the development. He also felt that the water currently available might be sufficient for five days. Accompanied by municipal councillor, Manjunath Manipal and others, he guided the pumping operations.
