Melbourne, May 30: The full moon rose from the north of the East of the horizon in all splendour reflecting its light from the sun, thereby illuminating the stars of the night sky, as Melbourne Konkans headed to the Town Hall in Collingwood, Abbotsford in the City for a May Ball - ‘Night Under the Stars’ recently.
With colourful costumes being the order of the day, the beautiful ladies came dressed in long flowy gowns glittering under the stars and the men sparkled in tux and suits under the moonlit night. The location - the Town Hall, rich in detail with prominent mansard roof and pyramid domes built in Second Empire Style was bustling with Konkan youths. The moment you stepped inside the entrance, they marvelled at accompanying you on the red carpet making way onto the mammoth ballroom. The ballroom was immaculately decorated with a multitude of twinkling stars in navy blue and silver tones. It was a night serene as one settled in their seats around a gorgeous table setting decked up for the occasion.
With the euphoria of the Melbourne Konkan Community’s first ever Sports Day held barely three weeks ago yet to die down, the Konkans were on the dancing floor swaying under the Stars to the beats of the evening’s musical group Shezwan SOS. The band set the tone with a slow dance waltz number that brought the couples to serenade in each other’s arms. The waltz music made way to peppy jive numbers which saw the dance floor filled to the brim with couples swinging and swaying each other. For persons of Indian origin, music is incomplete without sizzling Bollywood hits. The band played some scintillating old and new ones along with Bollywood masala which made the crowd go wild with a burst of energetic dancing.
Jane D’Souza, president of MKC in her speech thanked the sponsors without whose generosity, the event would not have been possible in such a grand scale. A plaque was presented to each sponsor as part of the facilitation amidst the loud cheers of Konkans from their respective seats. The president had a word of gratitude to the volunteers for their efforts in setting up the place and making the event glowing. The Yarra City Council was praised for providing the place for Konkans to meet, greet, chat and dance their hearts out.
Compere Rowina Alphonso in her amicable style kept the ball rolling throughout the evening and into the night. There were spot prizes, drinks, sumptuous starters, delicious buffet and mouth-watering desserts that delighted one and all.
A photo op in the foyer with a magnificent set up of moon and stars against a white back drop summed up the theme for the night. Attendee’s photographs were clicked against this marvellous backdrop that would be itched in the memory of Konkans for many years to come.
The lovely programme ended around midnight on a high note with the ‘Baila’ concluding it all.
