Mangaluru, May 27: "If beheading me will bring peace in the district and forever put an end to communal disharmony, then I am ready to sacrifice myself," said DK district Youth Congress president Mithun Rai, who was also the Congress candidate from Dakshina Kannada for Lok Sabha elections..
He was responding to a viral video, which shows Bajrang Dal activists who are celebrating BJP’s victory in Badakabail in Bantwal taluk, sloganeering that Mithun Rai should be beheaded.
Addressing reporters here, Mithun Rai said he will continue his fight against those who aim at disrupting peace with communal incidents. "If sacrificing myself will end the communal disharmony, then I am ready to die," he said.
He further challenged the Bajrang Dal activists to decapitate him. "I am not a person who gets scared of threats. I will stand in front of Congress office. You can come right there, as this will always be my address. However, I will not stop my efforts in fighting communal elements," he said.
Congress leaders and activists from different taluks have condemned the incident. Rai said he has also complained to the SP.
The viral video shows a person with a saffron headband, holding a Bajrang Dal flag verbally abusing Mithun Rai. "If Mithun Rai tries to put hurdles in any of Bajrang Dal matters, then we shall break his hands and legs. If need be, we shall decapitate him," the person is heard shouting in Tulu. His call for violence is repeated by other youths in the rally.
Following a complaint filed by Mithun, the Bantwal taluk police on Monday May 27 arrested a Bajrang Dal activist identified as Nishant.
