Madikeri: Rumours of tremors in Kodagu false, says district administration

Madikeri, May 25: Kodagu district administration has dismissed as false the information making the rounds in the social media about some parts of the district having experienced earthquake. Armed with documentary evidence, the administration has dubbed the information as a rumour.

The administration, taking note of the information about the earthquake, had taken up the issue with the state natural disaster response force and sought clarification. Director of the force, Srinivas Reddy, clarified that no data about any tremors were recorded in the 14 earthquake measuring centres in Kodagu.

He also said that even the centre at Harangi reservoir did not record any such developments. It said that the centre has been monitoring the climatic condition of each village of the district and getting updates of any undue developments. He has assured the administration and the people that there is no need to panic.

The rumours which were widely circulated in the social media had said that along with thunder on Thursday, light tremors were experienced at Nelyahudikeri village near Siddapur. This had given rise to apprehension and fear among the people.

    its just,

    Shock waves are what makes your house shudder when there is thunder. In fact, thunder is a shock wave.

    Lightning is a powerful discharge of electricity moving through air. Air is a poor conductor of electricity, so when lightning bolts burst through air, the air acts as a resistor (i.e. a substance that impedes the flow of electricity). As a result, when lightning does manage to burst through air, a great deal of heat is generated, often heating air to over 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This heat causes air to expand so rapidly that it generates a shock wave. When shock waves hit your house your house may shudder. Those shock waves are also the loud bangs and rumbles that we hear as thunder.

    We have felt the tremors at 11 pm yesterday.
    We are holidaying at tamara resort.
    District administration cannot dismiss it as a rumour.

    What happened last year in Madikeri was basically the wrath of Mother nature for what's been done to the forests there. All huge trees are cut down in forest areas, illegally occupied to make estates. Smaller plantations can't hold water nor soil firmly, so each time heavy downpour happens the water comes gushing. People unfortunately still haven't learnt lessons and deforestation continues to happen which is inviting more trouble. Won't be surprised if the last year's events repeat again this time...really sad.
