Mangaluru: Water shortage in city - Bishop Saldanha calls for mass prayers for rain

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, May 16: With temperatures soaring and rains remaining elusive even as the city faces water shortage, bishop of Mangaluru diocese Dr Peter Paul Saldanha has requested people to gather for a mass prayer for rains on Saturday May 18 and Sunday May 19.

In a press release, the diocese of Mangaluru stated, "Since people are facing scarcity of water due to delayed monsoon, bishop Peter Paul Saldanha has requested all the parishes, institutions and religious houses of men and women to organise prayers for the rains on Saturday May 18 and Sunday May 19."

The bishop has given a call to all the people 'to trust in the providence of God and pray for rains unceasingly', the release stated.

"The weather forecast says that the monsoon is delayed. We are facing the problem of scarcity of water. I earnestly request all the parishes, institutions and religious houses of men and women to implore God to be merciful towards us and grant rain.

"We trust in the power of Lord Jesus to come to our aid," the bishop said.

Over the past month, the city has faced acute water shortage due to a dip in the water level in Thumbe dam. Though parts of Dakshina Kannada have received nominal rains, Mangaluru city is yet to get a proper rainfall. As per the metereological department, monsoons are likely to hit Kerala on June 6.

Each house or building should have own well to store water to maintain ground water management. Make compulsory rule that those who have paddy fields should cultivate it & grow paddy so that this will help in maintaining ground water surplus.
Repair, remove waste mud from wells, ponds, water storage facilities to maintain ground water surplus. Stop cutting trees, forests, stop commercialisation of land.
Stop digging mountains to create resorts or other commercial establishments.
We should work & love the environment first, then pray.
Innovation is required for toilet flush system which is consuming most water.
Digging borewells everywhere is not a solution at all.
Let us all go & repair the old wells, ponds, water reservoirs, storage facilities etc.. etc.. Remove all the waste mud from them so that we will not face shortage of water in future.

Calling for prayers is good but at the same time please send messages or create awareness for saving environment as well.. Like
    1. When u construct buildings tell them to add adequate greenery also.
    2. Reducing the usage of unnecessary items like crackers etc
    3. Make environmental friendly celebrations and so on.

Ask people to save water, conserve water. Otherwise things will be worst and we will be in a situation like we can not offer prayers due to worst situation.

Of course we pray when we are in difficulty. May god hear our prayers and it rains early. Developing city Mangalore needs more infrastructure and plan for more storage of water in the future.

We had the highest rainfall in 2018. Rains in 2018 commenced from 27th or 28th April, 2018 and continued till Sept., 2018 causing floods in various parts of the city. Did the church conduct any mass prayers to thank the almighty for the highest rainfalls in 2018. To the best of my knowledge, there was no thanks giving mass in 2018. Why is the church calling for mass prayers when the rains have been delayed. Life is two ways and so also prayers should be two ways - We should thank god for good rains and also seeks help from god for early rains. Yes early rains is a must and the call for prayers is a must. It is time that the people of Mangalore city do a good planning with regard to saving of water and power. These are two top most necessities in our life. Even the City Corporation should start rationing of water from the beginning - Water only for 12 days a day - Morning 6 to 12 and evening 6 to 12.

Very good points.. I really appreciate those. Regarding your point of rationing the water from the beginning itself, and not during last two months can save so much water... Two/three hours a day with pressure it's enough.. That too alternate days... Most importantly, I would like to support your point of usage of water in appropriate way.. Whole year, many places, water is simply wasted... Thanks for your awareness to us through your comment.. God bless

Following example of Hindu religious leaders! More prayers the better, so God can have pity on humankind's atrocities against the environment by climate change.

Prayers would help, but water conservancy when it rains would go a long way as well. All the rain water drains into the ocean. Mangalore should have some artificial lakes to raise the ground water level up. We are producing so many Engineers every year, but no one can come up with a plan. Pustakada Badanekahyi

Varsha you are right.. We all have plans.. Finally its in the hands of government to implement. They assess, verify, call for meetings, argue, fight, busy in diverting the rivers etc etc.. In this process many years will ppass by. It's not in the hands of engineers alone dear. Need huge funds which government alone can think upon. Water problem not just this year. Same problems we are facing continuously since three years..!! Still, no measures are taken place... To tell you the fact, those who wells they cleaned it and try to conserve the water but not the other sources which government has to do 😥😥

It is indeed a very kind thought on the part of His Lordship Bishop Peter Paul to call a mass meeting and offer prayers for rainfall. Hope Our Lord will listen to the prayers of the faithful and help the people all over
