Water supply to Mangaluru from May 16 - Situation improves in Udupi

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 15: The water level at Thumbay dam, on which the city is entirely dependent for its drinking water requirement, has been gradually sliding with no inflow whatsoever. As per the revised rationing schedule, water would be supplied to the city for four days from 6 am on Thursday May 16 to 6 am on May 20, after gap of three days.

Places located at higher altitudes within city limits have been getting water through tankers. Water level at Thumbay dam as at Tuesday evening stood at 3.85 meters.

Udupi

With the efforts of officials and people's representatives at Udupi, inflow of water into the dam across River Swarna at Baje has improved. As per the rationing system, the city municipality has been supplying water once in six days by rotation system by dividing the city into six zones. The inflow into the dam was augmented by pumping water from large-sized pits, removal of boulders through machines and manual efforts. The water level at Baje dam rose to 1.80 meters on Tuesday from 1.06 meters on Monday. The officials, whose hopes about proper management of water supply have been kindled, said that water would be supplied to areas like Dodanagudde, Gundibail, Bittur, Santhekatte, Hanumanthnagar etc on Wednesday.

All the eight tankers employed for water supply remained busy on Tuesday. As compared to over 70 complaints relating to water received on Monday, the municipality got only 46 such complaints on Tuesday.

The Mangaloreans voted for BJP since 1991 for 25 long years. Neither flyover is completed nor drinking water vow can be resolved.
But BJP against 'Yetthinhole' project and questions the 70 years ruling of the previous government.

i would give the credit for improvement in udupi city for Mr Raghupathi Bhat. i am quite sure non of you will agree with me! this is because our biased media has not even reported the efforts put by him. Our MLA was near baje dam for the past 6 days and made sure that water is pumped there from various other sources. i request our media friends not to be biased when one is working for overall development of the society. thanks.

That's his job. A leader needs to be among the people, not just in air-conditioned offices and vehicles. A leader must be ready to roll up his sleeves and help with the work.

Unfortunately young minds are being tarnished into thinking that a leader's job is to give speeches 365 days a year.

The issue of water scarcity in Mangalore will continue in years to come unless the local authorities takes action. Unprecedented urbanization of Mangalore city with un scientific way of building house has resulted in this crisis.

Where there was one house before now we have 15 -20 flats .Imagine a place where 5 single houses were there with say 50 people we have 100 house with 200 people.

Apart from day to day garbage removal water also has become a issue and this will continue for years to come. If there is a failure of monsoon they it will be a real threat even during winter seasons.

Either government should start sea water desalination plants or reuse of the waste water for all purposes. In the short term if local government is not able to solve the issue then the city will land into the Water mafia (water supply by tankers) and it will be very difficult to get any solution like we have sand mafia and real estate mafia today. Rationing is a temporary solution , but depending on rain and rain water is a major threat on long term

Many people in Mangalore were against water rationing, if rationing was not done there would have been no water today. It is high time to think of radial wells in the river bed-also known as French wells, and desilting of water bodies so that next year there is no problem.Desalination plants can be considered if the authorities have funds.Begin today so that we have a better tomorrow.

The need of future is to plant as many trees as possible in all wastelands to bring down the temperature of that place so that heat and ground water evaporation can be controlled. Air becomes pure. Desilting and clearing of debris near or in the water bodies too improves the situation. Our area received abundant rainfall last year to last till the monsoon arrives. After deforestation, situation is turning horrible everywhere. Save Forests Conserve water.
