Mumbai, May 14: A 16-year-old was burnt to death after a fire broke out in the apartment complex and she was unable to escape, as her parents had locked her up in the room.
According to the police, Shravani Chavan (16) was locked in her room by her parents on Sunday, to ensure she studies and does not leave the house. Her parents then went to attend a wedding.
At around 1.45 pm, when Shravani was sleeping, one of the quarters on the third floor of the five-storey building caught fire.
Shravani sustained serious burns and was rushed to the civic-run Sion Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.
Initial investigation suggests that the fire was caused due to short-circuit in the air conditioner installed at the apartment. Several electrical wiring and household items were also gutted in the fire.
Shravani’s father is a police naik at the Vakola police station. They stayed in a quarters located in the compound of Dadar police station.
However, a fire official said that Shravani’s door was locked from inside and a can of kerosene was found. Police are currently investigating as to why kerosene was kept in the apartment and whether the fire was accidental or planned.
