Mangaluru: To reduce accidents city police to install 16 traffic blinkers at crucial zones

Mangaluru, May 13: Mangaluru police commissionerate is planning to install 16 new traffic blinkers, to reduce accidents in the city.

Speaking to the media, Mangaluru police commissioner Sandeep Patil said that the blinkers will help reduce mishaps. Accident prone zones, crucial cross roads, circles, junctions will be identified. Citizens can also help police identify risky traffic zones. The blinkers will be installed in these areas, he said.

The blinkers are solar powered and will help in smooth movement of traffic as well as reduce congestion. Blinkers also act as a deterrent to those who over speed.

A simple installation will not only make the city safe but will also save lives, he said.

    It's a good start. but what would really help is if the police could follow some basic thisngs
    1) start using the stop signals that are already in place. What's the point of the signals if they are not used? The police really struggle to control unruly vehicles at several spots. let's pick a few spots. Kankanadi, Bunts hostel, Kadri junction at NH66... All these spots have signals installed, but never used. Such a sad state for a smart city.
    2) Impose heavy fines on bikes and cars that trespass the pedestrian zebra crossing. The fine should be at least Rs.2K. They have to pay right away and no need to see a judge. The imposing police gets 10% of the ticket as bonus.
    3) impose heavy fines to two wheelers that park on sidewalks. Again the fine should be at least rs.2K. If not, the two wheeler should be towed away.
    4) Make the contractors doing work on new sidewalks accountable. Why should they be allowed to start work today and continue on for several months. I've seen work started on incomplete for almost six months now (Road from Bunts hostel connecting Bijai).
    5) Make private owners desecrating newly constructed or existing sidewalks (footpaths) fix them and pay a heavy penalty. The penalty should be a minimum of Rs.5K. Give the traffic cop the authority to get the payment right away. He should get a bonus of 10% for each ticket issued. Also make them wear body cameras so that the don't misuse their power.
    6) Remove the dangerous speed bumps and install flashing lights and proper signals. Probably good to install milder version of rumblers to ease traffic.
    7) More traffic junctions need signals. Examples:- lady hill, empire mall.
    8) remove obstacles for free traffic movement, and pedestrian crossing. Example:- Big circle at Lady hill, no proper pedestrian crossing at lalbagh traffic light.
    9) Impose heavy fines to autos/two wheelers traveling on the wrong side of the road.
    10) Publicise this information everywhere. Hire two cops to monitor and implement this.

    Point no. 9 is very important..Station police at these chronic wrong ride driving areas Another point is that in the highways heavy laden truvks drive on the right side of the road thereby slowing g down traffic and leading to congestion on the highway

    Looks like waste of money. A city where one can jump signal freely, what difference will it make if such blinkers are put? Almost at every junction one can see vehicles crossing even when the signals are red. Bikes and auto rickshaws are anyway not bothered about the signal and even cars and buses take them for granted. Vehicles going in reverse direction when there is a divider, vehicles crossing the divider pillars, taking U-turn where it is prohibited is simply going without any police stopping.

    In Mumbai, if you can manage to jump a signal without being caught, you must be a lucky one, may be one out of thousand vehicles.

    Better learn from these cities instead of wasting money on sign boards and blinkers..

    Blinkers are sheer waste of money and resources. Rumblers/speed breakers would have been better alternative.

    Police department should increase the coverage of security cameras and speed radars to crack down on offenders.
    Cost of the device could be used from the fines imposed.
    Imply strict rule, speed limit will be controlled.
