Dubai: 42-year-old Betty Fernandes dies during hip replacement surgery

Daijiworld Media Network - Dubai

Dubai, May 13: A woman lost her life during a hip replacement surgery at a private hospital here on May 9. The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) is looking into a complaint filed by her husband, Gulf News has reported.

Betty Rita Fernandes (42) is the deceased woman. She was the mother of a teenage boy and a girl.

The hospital has said that it has launched an independent review into the case.

“The case is currently under investigation. The DHA looks into every single case of alleged negligence or malpractice stringently. The Health Regulation Sector follows due process in line with international standards to investigate such cases, where a committee of subject matter experts is formed to investigate the case. Deemed action is taken according to the merit of each case.” informed Dr Marwan Al Mulla, CEO of Health Regulation sector at the DHA in a statement to Gulf News.

As per information available, Betty Rita Fernandes had a congenital issue and her hip was slightly displaced when she was born. According to her family, she decided to go in for a hip replacement surgery at a private hospital.

On the morning of Thursday, May 9, Fernandes was admitted for the two-hour left hip replacement surgery. She also went through pre-surgery checks and had cleared those.

However, during surgery she developed complications and her family was asked for consent for a second surgery with a vascular and general surgeon after the woman had internal bleeding in the pelvic area.

The patient’s family was informed that some kind of packing was placed in the pelvis area to reduce the bleeding after which the patient was to be moved to the ICU and in transit a CT scan was to be carried out.

However, soon after, Fernandes died in the operating theatre in the evening nearly eight hours after she was first wheeled inside the operating room.

It surprised me she opted for hospital in gulf for a major surgery.. It is always advisable to get major surgeries done in India as the doctors have exposure to different cases giving them lot of practical experience. Whereas doctors in private and that too in gulf do not have much practical exposure cz of less patients.. in her case she might have had injury to artery and loss of blood. Private hospitals lack blood products in large quantities. So in emergency when there is blood loss it has to be replaced immediately otherwise collapse n death is certain. Regarding consent before any major surgery high risk consent is taken which includes explanation of all possible complications..,

I had a surgery for slip disk. My vertebra 4 &5 collapsed and center nerve got stuck due the decreased gap. I was on bed and taking physiotherapy for a month but no progress and I was dying with paid and no way to travel to home town. Finally I took a bold step to undergo surgery in a private hospital in Kuwait fir refixation of collapsed vertebras and centre nerve. It was a 12 hour surgery and I totally became al rights and discharged from hospital with in a weeks time. It happened in 2011 and thank God I am having a perfect health but very careful. One experience is enough for life time.

My Mother had a hip replacement in early 2007 at Yenepoya Hospital under Dr. Deepak Rai. That time she was 71 and the operation was successful. This case requires thorough investigation and the hospital should be named and shamed.

such cases we find in India in more nos.

People will not complain in India. They take dead body home without a word. They not even think about it.

This is abroad and so news came out.

    RIP departed sister.

There is a clear bias when things go wrong in India and when things go wrong abroad.

I've noticed that too, that when things go wrong in India it does not take long for the narratives to take a political, communal or what have you turn. We Indians need to understand that people are people, and there are genuine mistakes, as well as intentional mistakes and this takes place all over the world.

My Heartfelt condolences and prayer for peace of the departed soul
Clearly appears that A well informed consent is not taken .Before operation ,durimg operation Patient and relatives should be well informed about all the complications
Few years ago I had a patient of pallet impacted into the leg .I referred to the Surgeon .Eventhough Surgeon was competent refused to operate and said please get this done by a team of 2 surgeons one Ortho and other Vascular surgeon as ots pikely that pellet is close to arteries and bones.I referred to very good surgeons but the setting was a small Nursing Home in Khar ,Mumbai .Relatives were well informed Surgery became 100 percent success no complications
We get illusioned with very big Corporate hospitals .Actually good compassionate Drs are more valuable than anything else .Corporate culture is a bit different people need to adjust or hospitals themselves need to reach out to patients and relatives .
In short lack of FAMILY DOCTORS CONCEPT is doing the damage
