Mangaluru: Vedavyas Kamath seeks preemptive measures against artificial flooding

Mangaluru, May 11: MLA, D Vedavyas Kamath, said that the officials should undertake the task of removing silt and waste that have accumulated in main drains, major culverts and storm drains that are a metre wide, on a war footing. He wanted the officials to take early precautions to avoid rainy season complications like artificial flooding as they pose serious problems.

"Sand and mud have accumulated by the sides of dividers. In some cases, the silt has been dug out and heaped by the side of the drains. Silt has been removed only from parts of some culverts, drains and main drains. We will have a major problem at hand if the waste so heaped gets back into the drain at the appearance of the first rain of the season," he warned.

Kamath was speaking after visiting different parts of the city on Friday May 10.

The MLA said that he cannot get the work done directly by passing instructions to officials as election code of conduct is in force. He wanted the officials to voluntarily work to get the work of removing silt and sediment through contractors within a week. He said that a WhatsApp number should be given from either the office of the deputy commissioner or municipal office, which should be given publicity through the media to enable the people to photograph spots where silt has not been removed, and send the same with details to the said WhatsApp number.
