Mangaluru, May 10: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC), Sasikanth Senthil, asked the officials to improve basic infrastructure in the city under seven different packages of the Smart City Project. He also told them to build smart roads as per plans and implement works by applying their minds in a different, unique way.
Senthil was addressing the participants of Smart City meeting held at the office of the deputy commissioner here on Thursday May 9.
"Always adopt modern way of thinking. You should avoid digging of the road and thereby create hiccups for the road construction after the roads are built. Contribute to the development of the city by concentrating on integrated development," he told officials of different departments who were present at the meeting.
Senthil was particular about not allowing the digging of roads after they are laid. He asked Mescom, Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd, water supply department PWD etc to identify works if any pending in their departments in areas where roads are planned to be constructed, coordinate with the officials of Smart City officials and help to complete the work without any problems.
Senthil observed that many a time, different institutions undertake the same work again and again, and dig the roads repeatedly after the work is attended to. He said the departments should work in tandem with each other and not to allow digging of roads after the work of repair is attended to. He said that the roads under the project should be people-friendly, and not vehicle-friendly. "Parking should not be allowed in footpaths. Pedestrian safety should be given paramount importance," he explained.
He asked BSNL, Mescom engineers etc to provide information about the cables they plan to install before the road construction is taken up. He said that roads that are planned to be completed before the end of this month should be completed as per time schedule and sought report on development works before the next meeting is held.
The deputy commissioner collected information of works undertaken by Mangaluru City Corporation. He advised the concerned to complete works either through TDR system. He also asked municipal officials to attend to the balance works on Mangaladevi Road and Bhavanthi Road and settle the same through discussions or TDRs. He asked the officials of the municipal corporation to consult the regional transport officer to sort out the issue of buses being parked near Kankanady market.
