Christian priest from Kerala joins Indian Army as religious teacher

Daijiworld Media Network – Kochi (RJP)

Kochi, May 9: Fr Jis Jose Kizhakkel of Kothamangalam is no ordinary priest whose duties are confined to a parish. He is a Naib Subhedar in the Indian Army now. He became the first priest of the Syro Malabar Church to be appointed to the rank of Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the Indian Army at the Institute of National Integration in Pune on Saturday.

Fr Kizhakkel (32) wanted to tread a different path for the betterment of society, after his ordination in January 2015. And in 4 years time, he has achieved his goal. He is a different priest now who is also serving the nation as an army man.

"When I came to know of the post of 'religious teacher' in Indian Army through their UPSC website, I was elated. After having been ordained a priest, I felt that this is the best thing I could for the nation and the soldiers who are selflessly guarding our lives. I applied, cleared the physical and medical tests in January last year and got selected for training," said Fr Kizhakkel.

“Training at the Institute comprised a gruelling seven-week physical training phase, and an 11-week spiritual training phase, which introduced us to teachings, principles, and rituals from every religion. This exercise is mandatory before being appointed as a JCO (Religious Teacher),” Fr Kizhakkel added.

In their new role, he and the 18 other personnel, who were also appointed as JCO (Religious Teachers), along with him as part of the batch of successful trainees, will be imparting lessons of the scriptures and conducting rituals and religious ceremonials for officers, jawans and their families. They would be organising celebrations of all religious functions and festivals at their respective units.

"I find myself very fortunate to be part of the Army and serve with the soldiers, who face severe stress and depression, being away from their loved ones in adverse weather and rough terrain while serving the Nation. It is a service to God also, and as all are destined in life to play a role, and I have humbly accepted this opportunity. There are priests working in foreign countries as chaplains in their Armed Forces." said Fr Kizhakkel.

The objective of a religious teacher in the Indian Army is to ensure national integration, with religious and regional harmony in the unit.

Son of Valsa Jose and late Jose Varghese, Fr Kizhakkel studied theology at St Thomas Apostolic Seminary in Vadavathoor and did his graduation in Philosophy from Calicut University and BCA and MCS from Bharathiar University.

With all the due respect to this priest, i strongly believe the armed forces should not include any religious matter in their organization. The armed forces are meant to defend and maintain the law and order of the land irrespective of any religious sentiments.

As per our constitution, People serving in Defence forces at their free will are allowed to practice their faith along with their families.
This is the prevelent practice in most of the democracies of the world.

I'm not saying that the soldiers should not be allowed to practice their faith. Religion should be a private affair especially when you are in a group where people belonging to various faiths come together. Do you want to practice some other religion in your office ? Do you want our armed forces to have a Religious Teacher for every other religion. Dont you think its a discrimination to have only a few religions being included in the Armed Forces?

I agree. A soldier is trained to kill. Religion teaches to love and forgive. A sure recipe to loose the war.

Soldiers minds are first prepared to love his country and its people; for this they are physically trained to fight hostile aggressive forces!
It's their duty to love the country more than themselves! Throughout the history of mankind there were soldiers. All are prepared for different purposes.
Otherwise soldiers are also like normal civilians, leading perfectly a normal persons life.

@Suraj Lobo, Dubai, here there is nothing about religious matter in organization as you mean. Here is mostly to console soldeirs in their duty to support them mentally in their duty ,and familys,to give courage to soldeirs when they get frustrated in what they are doing.Did you ever met a soldier wounded?what he undergoes mental stres s when he has to kill another person,?Here priest has to give last sacraments ,when a soldier is on his death bed if he longs for it,,pray with him and simply a social and mental help to persons who need it.Offer mass where no religious rituals are allowed ,he has to improvisieren. In this world one has to do his work what he can and best is.Not all people can work in Army camp ,specially wounded soldeirs are brought in bad condition and you see they slip away.God bless this priest .

Please pardon me if my understanding of this Religious Teachers Post in the Indian Army is wrong. All that i wanted to say was that this Religious Teachers post should not be a cause of discrimination for people of other religions. I hope this designation is a neutral one and does not give undue favour to a particular religion in the Indian Army. Dont you think in this modern times, religion should be made a private affair. Can you practice your religion in an office where people of other faiths are also present?

Regarding giving last sacraments, offering mass, etc , i'm sure people of other faiths too have their own rituals. Can the Indian Army afford to have a post like this for every other religion too ? I'm just being neutral here.
