Mangalore, Apr 6: "The voters will give a fitting reply to the dirty politics and anti-poor policies of the BJP government which is intoxicated with power, in the ensuing election," asserted Congress Party candidate from the local constituency, B Janardhan Poojary. He was addressing a meeting of party workers from the constituency, held in the city on Sunday April 5.
He asked the chief minister to respond to the allegation and list of purchase prices offered to the legislators coming into the BJP from other parties under 'Operation Kamala', published by a section of the press. He sharply questioned the chief minister as to whether his party suffered from dearth of capable candidates.
"In the recent past, houses of destitutes, who had occupied government land, were demolished. In spite of the opposition of the citizens, Self Assessment Property Tax Scheme(SAS) was introduced in the city. The Congress never indulged in such anti-poor policies. When the Congress was in the saddle here, our corporators ensured that the SAS was not implemented in the city, even though it was enforced all over the state. We convinced the then Chief Minister not to implement the scheme in the city," he explained. Poojary also criticized the BJP for claiming the road concretization works in the city as its own achievement, and claimed, the project was conceived and partially implemented during the Congress Party rule here.
"There were differences of opinion among our party leaders at the district level. However, the differences have since been resolved in a meeting held at the house of party leader Sankappa Rai at Puttur on Sunday. All the leaders including Bondala Jagannath Shetty, Sudhakar Shetty, Jeevan Bhandary etc., have assured to work unitedly for the victory of the party," Poojary revealed. He also expressed himself against making provocative speeches like chopping off hands, delivered by a few leaders, which he said, would not be liked by the people and that such persons would be violating the poll code of conduct.
Congress district president B Ramanath Rai reminded the people that millions of people were benefitted from the Land Reforms Act passed during the regime of the ex-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He lamented that many of those who got the benefit of this move, are now working against the Congress party. Ex-minister B A Moidin said, that the BJP has been trying to divide communities like Bearies, Christians, Moolyas, Mogaveeras, Dalits and other backward classes for the purpose of cornering votes.
Many district level leaders including K S M Masood, B Ibrahim, Kodijal Ibrahim, Gretta Rebello, Sursh Ballal, Shashidhar Hegde, M G Hegde etc., were present.
