Bengaluru: President nominates Justice Oka as CJ of state HC

Bengaluru, May 1: Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka of the Bombay High court was appointed as the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court by president Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday, April 30.

Justice Oka's appointment was notified to the state by a notification of the center that was sent on Tuesday to the concerned authorities of the state. The notifications further says that Justice Oka will assume his office from the date he takes charge of the high court of the state of Karnataka.

Justice Oka's appointment to the position of chief justice of Karnataka was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on April 8.

Justice Oka practiced in the chambers of his father Shreeniwas W Oka in the district court of Thane since his appointment in 1983. He joined the chambers of former judge of the Bombay High Court and former Lokayukta V P Tipnis in 1985-86. Many important matters and public litigations have been handled by him. He got promoted as additional judge of the Bombay High Court in August 2003 and as a permanent judge in November 2005.
