Mangaluru: Rationing of water re-introduced, no supply on May 1 and 2

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, May 1: The district administration has decided to re-introduce the water rationing system in the city due to the depletion of water level at the Thumbay vented dam, which is the lifeline of water supply to the city.

Accordingly, water supply will be stopped from 6 am on May 1 till 6 am of May 3. As the water needs to be conserved till the first week of June, the rationing system will continue as per the information given by the commissioner of the MCC. Water will be supplied for all the wards for 96 hours on four days and the same will be completely stopped for the next 48 hours.

The MCC and district administration had decided to follow the water rationing system on April 11 itself. However, later it was changed to implement after the polling on April 18. Accordingly, the water was stopped at 6 pm on April 18 till the morning of April 20. Then it was decided to stop the supply on April 24. However, due to the pressure from the public, people’s representatives and also due to the rise in water level to a little extent, the rationing system was dropped last week.

In the midst of all these developments, minister U T Khader had paid a visit to Thumbay vented dam and had told that further action will be taken depending on the possibility of rain on April 30. However, now, as the possibility of rain has waned, the district administration is compelled to continue with the water rationing system.

IF ONE PROPERTY CONSISTING OF A LARGE COTTAGE AND 6 MEMBERS OF A FAMILY, IS
SOLD TO A DEVELOPER, WHO CONSTRUCTS A LARGE HOUSING COMPLEX OF 70 TO 700
APARTMENTS, THEN THE PEOPLE OF MANGALORE SHOULD HAVE EXPECTED THIS DAY,
THE DAYS OF NO WATER AND SHORTAGES.

IF THE MANGALORE MUNICIPALITY HAD DONE SOME PROPER TOWN PLANNING OF REQUIREMENTS AND RESOURCES, AND IF IT HAD BANNED THE CONSTRUCTION
OF NEW APARTMENT BUILDINGS FROM THE PAST TEN YEARS, THEN SHORTAGES
OF ELECTRICITY AND WATER, AND TRAFFIC PROBLEMS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCED TODAY.

BUT GREED IN EARNING REVENUE, BY THE BUILDERS AND THE MUNICIPALITY AND
THE GOVERNMENT, IS THE ONLY REASON THAT MANGALORE HAS REACHED AT THIS
    SITUATION.

ONLY THE PEOPLE OF MANGALORE SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PHENOMENON.

It is a shame that water problem issue is still going on after so many years. I was born and brought up in Mumbai and worked there and then worked in Dubai. Fortunately, I got a chance to US since last 31 years and happily retired with my wife and children. We used to visit almost every year, but it is the same old story. No water, electricity goes off at any time and what not. This is not development for poor people and not the rich who are enjoying their lives.

We only talk about water during summer and forget after that.

Monsoon water goes to sea and in summer we face the same issue.
Water preservation with developed technologies needs to be thought. Supply capability and demand for water has to be planned well.

Desalination of sea water is a probable solution but it is expensive. People might find it difficult to bear high water cost. If Govt can subsidise then it can be thought.

If the problem becomes severe we see hotels, industries, schools being shutdown. Hospitals also might get effected. Pathetic planning by our authorities.

It seems at last the water supply tanker mafia has somehow made some adjustments with the authority to get some business this year.
The strange part is that the administration has not asked the industries like MRPL to reduce their share of water from the source.
