Moodbidri, Apr 28: Bishop of Mangaluru diocese Dr Peter Paul Saldanha on Tuesday, April 23 inaugurated Moodbidri Agriculturists' Association 'Samruddhi' at Moodbidri church hall here. The decision to form this association was taken during the silver jubilee celebration of Catholic Sabha Moodbidri deanery last year.
Inaugurating the association, the bishop opined that like soldiers, farmers are the backbone of this country.
'Samruddhi' is giving an opportunity to farmers to work in unity regarding issues concerning them. He lauded the unique initiative of Catholic Sabha Moodbidri deanery in this regard.
Pradeep D'Souza, director, horticulture department, Mangaluru was the resource person. He advised people on the benefits of associations and how they could improve agricultural productions and market if they work in unity.
Senior priest Fr Mark Valder, All India Catholic Union president Lancy D’Cunha, Catholic Sabha central committee president Rolphy D'Costa, Catholic Sabha Moodbidri deanery president Victor Kadandale were present on the dais.
Catholic Sabha Moodbidri deanery handed over a cheque of Rs 25,000 to the newly formed association as an initial help. Office-bearers and directors of the association were honoured by the bishop.
'Samruddhi' president Alwyn Menezes welcomed the gathering and secretary Arun Pereira the proposed vote of thanks. Andrew D'Souza compered the programme.
In the beginning, candle light prayer service was held for the victims of Sri Lanka bomb explosion to show solidarity with the brethren in Sri Lanka. Bishop Peter Paul led the prayer service.
