Udupi: Family loses ornaments worth Rs 5 lac at Shankarapura

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Apr   26: Unknown thieves, who entered a house at Shankarapura Kurkalu Subhash Nagar, succeeded in stealing gold ornaments worth nearly five lac rupees.

The thieves used a key kept inside an unlocked cupboard to open the lock of the other cupboard in which the ornaments were safely kept. A total of 195 grams of gold jewellery was stolen by the thieves.

The burgled house belongs to Irene Martis, retired teacher. She had attended an ordination ceremony in Shankarapura church on April 24. After coming back home, she had kept her ornaments inside a cupboard and locked it. As is her usual practice, she had kept the key of the cupboard inside another cupboard that is not locked.

Irene lives with her husband, son and a maid. Their daughter and son are employed abroad. Her husband and another son run a stationery shop in Shankarapura.

It is suspected that those who are close to the family would have committed this theft. The family members were sleeping in two rooms at night. Prima facie, it looks like the thieves knew that the ornaments were kept in the cupboard in the middle room, and its keys were kept in another cupboard. However, it is also possible that the thieves would have sifted through the unlocked cupboard first, and found the key of the other cupboard there.

A complaint of theft was lodged in Shirva police station and the personnel have begun investigation.

    As I remember , one doctor's house was bargled and several grames of gold taken away. That doctor filed a complaint in local police station. On filing complaints station house master and his subordinates behaved so arrogantly. Then that doctor lost hopes ...!
    In this case too police harass complainants , then everything goes in wind. Nowadays a burgler can openly defend with legal support. Legal system in India is for sale for law breakers.

    I feel sorry for the family who lost gold ornaments worth Rs. 5 lak. There may be several reasons for that. I understand It was the hard earned money but it is the police who have to investigate to find out the thief. There must be some important clue which is hidden somewhere and our police department will break it, sooner or later.

    Not funny ... it’s their hard money . It’s their house they kept their belongings god damn. It’s no ones business to enter their house and rob their belongings. It’s surely not a joke . My sympathies are with teacher and her family . Hope she will get her valuable back soon .

    Always to keep key of cupboard in box of rice. It will become difficult for thieves to search within rice.

    @Cynthia

    I believe gold is still a better investment than Interest on Bank Deposits, which have hit rock bottom already.

    Yes, gold is good investment.. But it's not safe to keep at home as well as in banks. My point of saying is usage of gold on the body should be minimum. Thieves can hardly snatch it or rob it. Even if they rob also not losing much and little tension. Ladies should be cautious on the road while walking.. If robbers, try to snatch hold it tightly at least one piece of chain remains in the hand... Happened twice in my friend circle...
