Mangaluru, Apr 21: “Indian Constitution is a great light which is leading us forward. It has led our nation in the path of Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. May this great powerhouse influenced by the spirit of the Mahatma and the founding fathers lead us forward and enable us to achieve the fruits of our freedom struggle to its fullest extent, The voiceless need the strength of our constitution most," said Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangaluru.

He was speaking after releasing the Konkani translation of the Indian Constitution on April 20 at Rosario Cathedral.

The Bishop also dealt on the fact that however good a Constitution is, if it is put in the bad hands it cannot be implemented properly, therefore the need of the hour is not only to study it, respect it but to make all out attempts to strengthen it, put it in the hands of right people. When we speak about our rights we should also remember to speak about our duties and constitutional responsibilities he said.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of India wants every student studying in its Institutes to learn and understand the provisions of our constitution, CBCI wishes that this will make future generations more sensitive to the needs of our great nation and our youth will in turn become responsible and responsive citizens he said. In his address he asked all Konkani speaking people to make use of this book to the fullest extent possible. He appreciated the hard work put in by the Diocesan Commission for Lay Faithful and thanked the Diocesan committee for Citizen awareness and Development for their support in this great task.

Bishop Saldanha felicitated translator Prof Stephen Quadros Permude after the release and wished him all the best for his future endeavors. Prof Quadros thanked all concerned. After immense appreciations, as an initial matter, we all Konkanas owe a great debt to Professor Prof Stephen Quadros Permude for his most inspiring works, Konkani translation of the Indian Constitution where I hope our next generation will gratefully rediscover the treasure from the annals of history.

Dear Prof. You are simply a great man ! Great men are rare, poets are rarer, but the greatest MAN who is more rarer, a translator, transfiguring his greatness for his Konkani people, true servant of our society.

Kudos to the ambitious hard work of Diocesan Commission for Lay Faithful i.e., Roy Castelino, co-convener, M P Noronha, Secretary Diocesan Pastoral Council and others.

Let not our people forget how true are the words from Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangaluru, “The voiceless need the strength of our constitution most”.
