Bengaluru, Apr 18: An FIR has been registered against BJP Bengaluru South candidate Tejasvi Surya for posting a video on social media urging people to vote for the BJP, soon after he exercised his franchise.
The Election Commission officials on Thursday filed a model code of conduct violation complaint against Surya for using social media platforms to influence voters. In the video Surya directed BJP party workers to not rest and make people come out in large numbers to vote for Modi.
Surya sent an appeal to people on twitter. “Our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji has entrusted this job in your capable hands. There are only few hours left until voting ends and I request each and every one of you to go door to door and request people to vote,” he tweeted.
EC's flying squad officials registered a case against Surya under the provisions of Representation of People's Act.
Senior official from Siddapura police station told media that an FIR has been filed against Surya and he has been asked to remove the video. Action will be taken if he fails to delete the video, he said.
However, it was not just Surya that used social media to make appeals. Former CM Siddaramaiah posted pictures of Tejasvi Surya, Pratap Simha and Nalin Kumar Kateel and called them woman abuser, woman cheater and woman molester respectively. He asked people to think before they vote.
Former PM H D Devegowda sent out a twitter appeal to vote for Cong-JD(S) coalition candidate C H Vijayshankar in Mysuru-Kodagu Lok Sabha constituency.
