Gadag, Apr 18: A girl from Hudco Extension in the town, who was on way to become an engineer, was robbed of her life on account of Facebook love.
The girl who chose to end her life was Sphoorti (19) from here. She was in the second semester of engineering degree course. It is said that Facebook love was the reason for her decision to kill herself. At the same time, it is gathered that she used to try to instil sense in young boys and girls who were in love, against falling prey to concepts like love immaturely, to become practical, and to concentrate on meeting immediate goals like education and employment first.
Sphoorti came in contact with Chaitanya from Gudur in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh, by chance. She had liked a photo Chaitanya had posted on Facebook. The two began coming closer to each other after they began messaging to each other. The initial friendship paved way for love. Chaitanya, in his Facebook profile, had claimed himself to be a railway employee. The two were in love with each other since about a year.
Chaitanya had once escorted Sphoorti to his hometown. During this period, he pointed out to a residential complex there belonging to someone else, and claimed that it belonged to his family. Sphoorti reposed faith on whatever he said. But after this visit to Gudur, Chaitanya began to behave strangely. It is said that he used to get calls from his wife frequently. Sphoorti got suspicious about his background and questioned him, but Chaitanya failed to provide convincing answers to her questions.
A week after she returned from Gudur, Sphoorti came to know that Chaitanya was already married and has two children. His behaviour towards her underwent changes, and he did not properly converse with her even when she called him. Frustrated by this, Sphoorti committed suicide at her home when no one was around, on April 4.
Before that, Sphoorti had revealed to her parents about her love story that had gone awry and abruptly ended, in addition to revealing to them that she had become a victim of deception. The realisation that she had been duped by the person whom she trusted the most had psychologically drained her. Unable to bear this agony, she committed suicide.
A case relating to this suicide stands lodged in the town police station here. The police have taken Chaitanya into custody. Parents of the girl are determined to ensure that the man who misled their daughter and is responsible for her death has to be punished.
