Udupi, Mar 19: After the earth caved in at the time of lowering rings for a newly-dug well in Kodi Kanyana in the taluk, one of the labourers died while another was injured on Wednesday March 18.
Sathish (25), a resident of Barikeri of Kotatattu village, died in the incident, while Ramesh (27) is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kundapur.
Out of the six labourers engaged for the work of fixing concrete rings for the newly-dug well in the land belonging to a villager named Shekhar, Satish and Ramesh had got down into the well. After a huge mound of earth from one side of the well suddenly slipped below, Sathish was buried under it up to the chest level. Ramesh too got partially buried in the soil. Ramesh could be brought out with great effort, with the help of local people. Before Satish, who was gasping for breath could be brought out, earth caved in further, complicating matters.
Fire brigade personnel from Udupi and Kundapur, Kota policemen and the local citizens made valiant efforts to loosen out the mud and release Satish. With the help of doctors from the local hospital, artificial breathing was also provided. After putting in two hours of hard work, he was brought out and carried to hospital, but Satish died on the way.
MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary, Saligram town panchayat president Raju Poojary etc visited the spot. A case has been registered in Kota police station.
