Mangaluru: Proposed skywalk plan shelved - underpass near Town Hall soon

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 13: After laying the foundation for the first ever skywalk project near the Maidan Road here three years back, the project was languishing, as nothing happened thereafter. Now, this project has been shelved, and an underpass is being built at a cost of six crore rupees at the same spot under the Smart City Project.

Skywalk had been originally planned taking into account problems encountered by people to cross this road. Several accidents have happened here. Therefore the skywalk project was planned by the city corporation here in association with Coastal Development Authority. As per the underpass project drawn up by Smart City Ltd now, it will be a 30-feet wide road to be built from the point where the road connects taluk panchayat compound to the park in front of the Town Hall. Its height would be 12 feet and length would be 33 meters.

The park near the Town Hall will also be developed with a 55 meters pathway connecting the park, a vendor street with six stalls inside the park, and a mini amphi theatre.

Managing director of Mangaluru Smart City Ltd, B H Narayanappa, said that underpass project is being taken up in place of skywalk planned earlier, and tender process will take place soon. This would the first ever underpass of the city.

Main contractor for flyover was one Mr. Nalin. But now Nalin is not hopeful of getting the chance. Hence better to go for underground construction so that people will not notice even if it takes 10 years.

This proposal is utter nonsense. I believe Skywalk would have built with much lesser cost and all pedestrian passing thru will be having security hence it is above ground.
Constructing under pass need to be provided with mechanical ventilation, storm water pumps and security guards 24x7.
