New Delhi, Apr 12: In the latest affidavit Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani states that she has not completed her graduation. The same topic had stirred a controversy five years ago when she asked the Delhi University not to disclose her educational details and a petitioner alleged she had given contradictory information in her affidavits filed before contesting elections in 2004, 2011 and 2014.
On Thursday, while filing her affidavit she declared to the Election Commission that she is not a graduate. In the affidavit she stated that she enrolled for a three-year degree course in Delhi University but she could not complete it. She made the same declaration in her 2017 affidavit to the Rajya Sabha, where she is a member.
When the she contested in the 2014 election from Amethi for the first time, she had listed Bachelor of Commerce Part-1, School of Open Learning (Correspondence) University of Delhi, 1994.
In 2004, when she contested in Delhi's Chandni Chowk against Congress leader Kapil Sibal, her affidavit only said BA.or Bachelor of Arts, 1996, Delhi University (School of Correspondence).
With this revelation, the HRD minister is foddering a fresh controversy for the opposition since they had been raising the issue when she made contradictory declarations in 2004 and 2014 parliamentary elections.
In the affidavit, Irani also declared her assets worth over Rs 4.71 crore. She has declared movable property worth over Rs 1.75 crore and immovable assets worth Rs 2.96 crore, which include an agricultural land valued at over Rs 1.45 crore and a residential building of Rs 1.50 crore.
