Udupi, Apr 9: Fishermen from Bhatkal had a close call after their boat that set sail from Malpe here capsized late night on Monday April 8 near Devgad in Maharashtra, incurring a loss of Rs 90 lac.
Fortunately, the fishermen were rescued by another boat and brought ashore to safety.
'Shivaraksha' boat belonging to Dinesh Tingalaya of Padutonse Bengre Hoode set sail on April 6 with Bhatkal fishermen identified as Sunil Manjunath, Suresh Manjunath, Jagannath Rama, Prashanth Moodagi, Gajendra Panduranga, Krishna Mogera and Lohith Dharma.
It is learnt that the crew was fishing near Ratnagiri in Maharashtra when the base of their boat dashed against some object. Water began to seep into the boat, and the fishermen immediately signalled to a nearby boat for help.
The fishermen on the other boat, named 'Shiva Tejas', came to their help and rescued all the seven fishermen. Other boats namely 'Vara Siddhi', 'Hanuma Sanidhya', and 'Radhambika' also joined the rescue mission and dragged the Malpe boat.
However, before it could be brought to safety, the Malpe boat capsized near Devgad about 34 metres off the coast. Nearly 8,000 litres of diesel, nets, GPS and the fish that had been caught by the fishermen sunk along with the boat. The total loss is estimated at Rs 90 lac.
