Mandya, Apr 3: The Congress has filed a complaint with the Election Commission to stop independent candidate Sumalatha’s supporters from using the iconic Congress ‘hand’ symbol.
Sumalatha wife of late actor and politician Ambareesh filed her nomination as an independent, after the coalition government decided to launch H D Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil from Mandya constituency.
When Sumalatha announced her decision to contest as an independent, she was supported by the BJP who did not field their candidate.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Dinesh Gundu Rao questioned on how Congress flag and icon can be used to campaign for an independent candidate.
“When she is supported by the BJP, then let BJP flag be waved. But waving our flag is not right,” he asserted. He also said that Congress workers who are using the party flag to support Sumalatha’s campaign can quit the party and work for whomever they want. Rebellious activities will not be tolerated from the members and the leaders and workers have to face consequences, he warned.
Sandalwood starts Yash and Darshan are campaigning for Sumalatha.
Congress has failed to control the dissidence within the party in Mandya and this has irked its coalition partner JD(S).
