Kerala woman starved by in-laws for dowry, weighed 20 kg at time of death

Daijiworld Media Network

Kollam, Mar 31: The death of a 27-year-old woman in Kollam has brought to light a case of alleged dowry harassment by her in-laws. At the time of her death, the woman was reduced to a 'bag of skeletons' and weighed just 20 kg due to prolonged starvation.

Tushara, a native of Karunagappally near Kollam, was denied proper food for days and survived only on soaked rice and sugar syrup before she breathed her last at a government hospital, police said, quoting the postmortem report and neighbours.

Tushara's husband Chandulal and his mother Geetha Lal have been arrested and remanded.

At the time of her death on the midnight of March 21 due to illness and uneasiness, the woman weighed just 20 kg, the police said.

The alleged torture of the woman came to light in a probe the police conducted after her death.

"She looked like a bag of a skeleton with hardly any flesh on her body. She weighed just 20 kg. A detailed inquiry has thrown light to the cruelty. Her relatives alleged that the torture was to get more dowry," a police official was quoted in media reports.

Tushara leaves behind two children - aged one-and-a-half years and three - and both of them are healthy, the police official said.

Tushara's mother Vijayalakshmi has alleged that the accused had been torturing her daughter for the past five years and had not allowed the family members to meet her for the last one year.

"My daughter had suffered gruesome torture. We did not give any police complaint as we feared it would put my daughter's life in danger," she said.

The woman's husband used to do odd jobs other than welding works. The couple married in 2013. At the time of the marriage, the woman's family had given some gold ornaments and money to the man's family and had promised to give Rs 2 lac later.

A neighbour said the woman was allegedly tortured mentally and physically by the husband and her in-laws.

If Kerala justice is really very strict then such unfortunate incident wouldn't have happened in the state that boasts of highest literacy. Secondly victims of rape and murder too would have got fair justice by now.

Tushara .. very cute a young lady lost her life just because of dowry. Murdered her without giving food... Very sad.. May her soul rest in peace.. Tushara's parents should have taken proper action when they knew that their daughter's life is in danger. We parents also doing mistake considering the status of our society. Damn it... See the face of her so called band..... and that M-I-L.. by face only we can make out how cruel they are. Dowry harassment even after having two kids.. Oh no... Should punish them vigorously... Dowry Dowry .. Even today in some of the matrimonial profiles there is a demand from boy's side that girl's min. annual income should be 6 lacs and above.... As if he is not marrying a girl, he is marrying her income.. Pathetic!!!

As per Indian Court of Law ,Dowry is a crime. But if you go to remote areas especially in places of deep cultural values, its a must to give dowry or else the marriages do not happen. Crores of money has to be kept aside only for this. Its a matter of pride for groom to take the requested amount in cash and kind.Even the educated are greedy for dowry money.Shame on the uncultured society.

This must stop. But this will not end unless the world ends.......

This man and whoever tortured that innocent women, must be jailed for life. And they must be served one vegetarian meal per day with one mug of water per day. And kept in dark room for rest of their life.

Some people use women as commodities, just for some physical pleasure and to get done some of the menial jobs and they are disrespected. What a shame ….we do pujas to devis and mother goddess durga, however we forget its the same durga that lives in our homes as our mother, wife, daughter, sister and we don't take care of them . and we call ourselves literate, cultured, civilised.

Even those neighbours that remain silent even after witnessing these cruelties meted out in their neighborhood, are as much culprits. lets wake up and and see if any women, girl child are ill treated in our neighborhoods, including our own homes, justice must be done, paramartha and prushartha is that which provides safety, justice & respect to our womenfolk.

Its waste of energy and time when we do puja to durga and disrespect women, lets walk the talk and raise against anyone that ill treats innocent, ignorant people and especially women.

Terrible news. It sent a chill down my spine. How can we call ourselves human beings when we unleash this kind of mental and physical torture? What will be the fate of those innocent children whom the mother has left behind? The custodians of our culture should rise against this kind of inhuman treatment. Where are such people gone?

What a loss of life at the beginning of a wedded life. What is the point in bringing to light the whole episode after her death when we are living in a society. The girl too looks educated. Weren't there anyone who could take action against these barbaric people. Human Rights awareness should be televised and made known to each and everyone so as to save the victims of torture and ill treatment.

A Maharashtrian girl saw tears in her father's eyes, during some argument on dowry on her wedding day. She came out and shouted, that the marriage is cancelled, since she does not want to marry a boy who is responsible for her father's tears. Looking at her courage, immediately, one boy amongst the relatives came forward to marry her without conditions. Marriage was solemnised and the father of earlier boy was made to leave his headgear before leaving, which is a mark of disrespect among them.

Any young man who makes a condition of dowry to marriage, discredits his education and his country and dishonours womanhood. (Mahatma Gandhi).

I do not understand why an educated girl should remain with such a satanic husband and mother-in-law. I blame her parents too. Are we in 21 century ? Dowry is a most barbaric system and it has made the life miserable of many young women. Shame on our educated young men, who want to live on dowry.

An older Chinese pictogram (nuán) symbolises two separate sets of meanings: (a) two women together (b) quarrel, quarreling, foolishness, foolish, etc...

It is a well-accepted belief world-over that a daughter-in-law and mother-in-law can never live under the same roof.

If they do, the son/husband will ALWAYS favour the mother, and treat the wife as an outsider.

So, if you are not married yet, wait until your girldfriend turns 40 before marrying her! There will be far fewer issues.

Very sad.. Literate state. When parents knew all these things, they should have taken her out from that cruelty with the help of police and should have looked after her. Just imagine up-to what extent this cruelty has reached ??? No one did anything for her survival.. Very very sad. Rest in peace dear.. this only may be the option for you to get relieved from tortures😞
