New Delhi: Bishop Franco's close aide Fr Antony Madassery held with Rs 10 crore illegal money

New Delhi, Mar 30: The police here have arrested Fr Antony Madassery along with four other men and a woman. Fr Antony was found to be in possession of ten crore rupees in cash, about which he could not provide a satisfactory explanation.

Fr Antony is known to be a close aide of former Jalandhar Bishop, Franco Mulakkal, who is facing the charges of raping a nun.

Officials of the enforcement directorate recovered the said money from Franciscan Missionaries office-cum-residence at Jalandhar during a raid on Friday, March 29 night. It is learnt that the concerned failed to either provide any documentary proof for possessing such a huge cash or provide satisfactory explanation.

It is said that Fr Antony Madassery had visited Kerala when Bishop Mulakkal was arrested, and he had later returned to Jalandhar along with the Bishop. Fr Antony Madassery reportedly told the police that the money was meant to meet expenses connected with Navajeevan Society and Sahodaya private security agency. Both these entities reportedly function under Franciscan Missionaries.

The police and enforcement directorate officials are investigating the matter further.

    We should make all religious and charitable institutions declare their assets and file annual income and expenditure statements with the govt. authorities (Income tax) whether or not they are exempt from Income tax. Tax exemption is a big loop hole in the system. It is possible that people can hide their unaccounted money with these institutions and then use such institutions as clearing house for underground activities. We need religious and charitable institutions should be taxed so that there is transparency and accountability in dealing with public money.

    It is a very common practice, that head of Religious Institutions collect donations and use such money for their projects like reaching out the needy and poor, etc... (It is more so in India).

    Considering the magnitude of reach-out programs of Catholic Diocese , Rs ten crore is not a big amount. Any religious institute which reaches out the poor and needy holding cash amounts like this is well justified.

    Wilfred Lewis Matpady /USA it is not normal such a amount keeping private person or Bishops.They have to keep a list the origin or for which use.without it it is clear ,a black money.Was there not a question saying ten crores or so money will be given to Nuns when they withdraw the case?Or the nun who filed case.Somehow it is a shame from Heads of church indulging in large number of money without proper reason with them.Afterall priests too are humans ,can make mistakes but be honest.

    Generally, enforcement directorate officials are not very keen of searches in religious offices and homes. Here, this priest having supported Bishop Franco, had invited displeasure from many Catholics. This, I presume, may be a raid, after getting the news from a complaint by a known person. Either way, whether the money is his or someone else's, keeping that much money in cash was wrong. Generally, I find Catholic churches keep accounts of all money received and spent in proper record.
